Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge certain decisions from the official, following the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
